Ethyl acetate is a top-consumed ester solvent in the coatings, ink, and pharmaceutical industries. With a boiling point of approximately 77°C, it is slightly soluble in water and prone to hydrolysis when exposed to water. These three properties determine the main approach for recovery: the condensation temperature can be set within the chilled water range, without the need to reach deep cold; the focus of condensate management is on water prevention and temperature control - prolonged contact between esters and water, especially at high temperatures, can lead to hydrolysis, generating acetic acid and ethanol, which can degrade the purity and odor of the recovered liquid.
The overall economics of ester recovery are better than those of alcohol recovery: there is no need to configure a distillation tower for dehydration, and most condensate can be directly blended and reused after filtration and testing. Ensuring proper hydrolysis prevention is the most worthwhile consideration in the operation of ester recovery units.
The saturated vapor pressure of ethyl acetate determines that most of it can be recovered through two-stage condensation under conventional inlet gas concentration: the first stage involves pre-cooling with normal temperature or chilled water, while the second stage concludes with chilled water temperature level, and the residual is treated through series adsorption in the emission control section. The temperature level calculation is based on the dew point of the inlet gas concentration. One difference from alcohol recovery is that the lower the temperature level, the better is not necessarily true. Too low a condensate temperature will increase the energy consumption for subsequent temperature rise. It is sufficient to choose an economic temperature level based on the concentration of most batches, with the peak left to the control section to handle.
The configuration scale of the recovery device is determined based on the intake load, without blindly increasing it for extreme operating conditions. The main body of the device is selected based on the median load of most batches, with the fluctuation section being managed by adjustment means and the check section following up. This approach ensures both investment efficiency and operational stability. The configuration scheme takes the actual measured data of batch-by-batch concentration as input, which is more practical than estimating parameters based on the brand manual.
Explosion-proof and anti-static management are integrated throughout the entire configuration process: esters have a low flash point and a low lower explosion limit, pipeline flow rates are controlled according to specifications, equipment grounding is inspected point by point, and the explosion-proof selection of fans is confirmed during the planning stage. These safety facilities are designed and inspected together with the main recovery body, and regular inspections after operation are carried out according to regulations.
There are three key aspects to consider in preventing hydrolysis: rapid collection and disposal of condensate - condensate in stratified tanks or storage tanks should not be stored for extended periods and should be transferred in batches; preventing condensate from reaching high temperatures - the temperature of condensate in the condensation section should be controlled within a safe range compatible with water, and insulation measures should be taken for the collection pipeline to reduce temperature rise inside the pipeline; minimizing water entrainment in incoming gas - pre-cooling and dehumidification should be used to remove water vapor first, and solvent-containing wastewater from cleaning operations should be collected separately and not mixed with the condensate system.
The quality of the recycled liquid is monitored through a closed-loop system: purity, moisture, and acidity are tested batch by batch. An increase in acidity indicates that hydrolysis has occurred. The retention time of the condensate and the water-carrying links are checked, and the cause is corrected before reuse. Batches with significantly high acidity are downgraded for use or sent for external treatment, and are not directly mixed into the ingredients.
| project | Characteristics of esters | Configuration considerations |
|---|---|---|
| boiling point | About 77℃ | Two-stage condensation at the chilled water temperature level |
| water-soluble | Slightly soluble and prone to hydrolysis | Rapid collection and quick discharge of condensate, temperature control |
| Layered nature | Weaker than aromatic hydrocarbons | After filtration and detection, it is blended and reused |
| Hydrolysis risk | High temperature exacerbates when exposed to water | Pre-cooling and dehumidification with less water |
| flash point | low | Flow rate grounding explosion-proof control |
| Quality signal | Acidity increase | Check the storage and water-carrying links |
According to the requirements of the coating system, most ingredients have purity requirements of over 99% and moisture content of a few thousandths. The recovered liquid is tested batch by batch before being blended, and the acidity index is monitored separately - changes in the quality of esters are first reflected in acidity.
The sour taste indicates that hydrolysis has occurred. First, measure the acidity: batches with slightly elevated acidity are downgraded for use in less demanding scenarios; batches with significantly exceeded standards are not used. At the same time, check the retention time of condensate and the water-carrying process to eliminate the root cause of hydrolysis.
For conditions with low air volume and stable concentration, activated carbon adsorption is suitable, as both investment and operation are straightforward. For conditions with high and fluctuating air volume, a combination of membrane separation and adsorption is more stable. The selection of equipment should be based on the specific working conditions, rather than the age of the equipment.
