How to recycle dichloromethane waste gas? Key points for condensation and recovery configuration of low-boiling point chlorinated solvents

Methylene chloride is a chlorinated solvent that is widely used in pharmaceutical and fine chemical industries. With a boiling point of about 40℃, it volatilizes rapidly at room temperature, resulting in high tail gas concentration and large emissions, which are its typical operating conditions. The recovery process mainly involves condensation: a low boiling point means a high vapor pressure at room temperature, so the temperature needs to be lowered to a relatively low range to recover a large amount. The setting of temperature and the calculation of condensation load are the most crucial considerations in the configuration of methylene chloride recovery.

Another characteristic of dichloromethane is its non-flammability: it has a high lower explosion limit and does not fall within the category of conventional flammable liquids. Therefore, the explosion-proof rating requirements for recovery equipment are relatively relaxed, and more attention can be placed on condensation efficiency and corrosion prevention - this is also the main difference in the recovery schemes for chlorinated solvents, alcohols, and esters.

How to determine the condensation temperature level

The temperature level is calculated based on the dew point corresponding to the intake concentration: for high-concentration exhaust gas, the first stage of two-stage condensation involves chilled water precooling, while the second stage involves deep cooling for final recovery. In most operating conditions, most of the gas can be recovered. For low-concentration exhaust gas, the incremental benefit of condensation decreases, making it more cost-effective to use a series adsorption system for quality control. The lower the temperature level, the better is not always true: every decrease in temperature level increases both energy consumption and defrosting burden. The economic temperature level should be determined based on the concentration of most batches, with the peak left to the quality control stage to ensure stability. This calculation should be clarified during the planning stage.

The calculation of condensation load uses measured concentrations as input: for operating conditions with large differences between batch peak and average values, the main body of the device is selected based on median load, with the peak segment being undertaken by the buffer tank and the check segment, balancing both investment efficiency and operational stability.

How to choose anticorrosion and materials

How to recycle dichloromethane waste gas? Key points for condensation and recovery configuration of low-boiling point chlorinated solvents

When chlorinated solvents encounter trace amounts of water, they undergo hydrolysis to generate hydrogen chloride. It is essential to prevent acid corrosion on both the condensate side and the tail gas side. Condensate storage tanks and pipelines should be made of corrosion-resistant materials or lined with such materials. Condensate should not be stored for extended periods and should be transferred promptly upon collection. When selecting heat exchangers, attention should be paid to chloride ion corrosion, and cooling water quality management should be carried out simultaneously. The selection of adsorption materials for the tail gas control section should also avoid acids - it is not uncommon for materials to become inactive in the presence of acids. Acid resistance and pre-dehumidification should be determined together in the plan.

The quality of the recycled liquid is monitored through a closed-loop system: purity and acidity are tested batch by batch. An increase in acidity indicates accelerated hydrolysis. The retention time of the condensate and the water-carrying steps are checked. Reuse continues only after the causes have been corrected. Batches with significantly elevated acidity are downgraded and not directly mixed into the ingredients.

The tightness of the exhaust gas collection end is also worthy of investment: dichloromethane volatilizes quickly at room temperature. Even a small amount of leakage at the interface between the collection hood and the pipeline can increase the concentration on the workshop operation surface. The tightness inspection should be included in the monthly plan, and the sealing points should be checked one by one. The workshop concentration data should be compared and analyzed with the results of the tightness inspection, and it is not difficult to find the problem spots.

How to implement operation management

  1. The condensation temperature level is calculated based on batch concentration and dew point, with economic temperature level and check section as a backup;
  2. The equipment is selected based on the median load, with peak loads being handled by the buffer and check sections;
  3. Select corrosion-resistant materials for the condensate side, ensure quick collection and transfer, and avoid long-term storage;
  4. Ensure the material selection for the control section is acid-resistant, and the pre-dehumidification is adequate;
  5. The purity and acidity of the recycled liquid are tested batch by batch, and the cause of any increase in acidity is investigated immediately;
  6. We must not slacken our efforts in managing toxic media, and we must keep a close eye on closed ventilation and concentration alarms during each shift.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the recovered dichloromethane be reused directly?

Most of the energy: After filtration and testing, the condensate is reused according to its purity. Batches containing water and acid are distilled and then reused. The recovery of chlorinated solvents is economical, and as the reuse rate increases, both solvent procurement and waste liquid disposal are reduced.

Does non-combustible mean we don't need to worry about explosion protection in the configuration?

The explosion-proof requirements can indeed be relaxed, but safety boundaries extend beyond just explosion-proofing: the management of dichloromethane toxicity is a key focus. The tightness of the equipment, concentration detection on the operating surface, and ventilation configuration should be carried out according to the requirements for toxic media. Concentration alarms should be monitored shift by shift.

What should we do if frosting in the deep-cooling section affects operation?

Frosting is a normal occurrence during low-temperature operation. In terms of management, two things should be done: defrosting should be scheduled periodically, and it should not be postponed until the heat exchange capacity decreases; sufficient precooling and dehumidification of the inlet air should be ensured. With less water vapor entering the deep cooling section, the frost will be thinner, and the defrosting cycle will naturally be extended.
