Acetone is one of the most widely used solvents in laboratories and fine synthesis, with a boiling point of approximately 56℃, strong volatility, and complete miscibility with water. These properties determine two characteristics of acetone tail gas recovery: the condensation temperature needs to be lower than that of conventional esters, and the condensate is non-layered and inevitably contains water, making the dehydration process of the recovered liquid more complex than that of alkanes.

By clarifying these two points during the configuration phase, there will be significantly fewer issues during the operation phase: the temperature level should be calculated based on dew point and concentration, and the treatment depth of condensate should be determined based on water content and usage, without aiming for immediate purity.

How to determine the condensation temperature level

Acetone has a high saturated vapor pressure and can volatilize significantly at room temperature. When the inlet concentration is high, two-stage condensation is used: the first stage collects most of the acetone at around 5℃, and the second stage compresses it to below zero degrees Celsius for final collection. In conditions of low concentration and high air volume, the cost of temperature level for pure condensation rises significantly. By connecting condensation with membrane separation or adsorption in series, with condensation collecting the majority and the latter stage acting as a check, the total operating cost is lower.

The basis for temperature level accounting is the dew point corresponding to the inlet gas concentration: as the concentration fluctuates with the process, the median concentration from multiple batches is used to determine the basic temperature level, with the devices at the later stage serving as a backup during peak periods. The materials and insulation for the low temperature section must also keep pace: as the temperature level decreases, the frosting area of pipelines and equipment moves outward, and the defrosting operation points change accordingly. During configuration, the operation channels and drainage should be arranged together.

How to handle condensate with water

How to recycle acetone waste gas? Configuration ideas for water-soluble solvent condensation recovery and condensate dehydration

Acetone condensate is miscible with water, and no distinct phase can be separated after standing still. The treatment depth is determined according to reuse requirements: for reuse in low-requirement scenarios such as cleaning, it is directly blended after testing for moisture and purity; for reuse in synthetic ingredients, it is reused after distillation and dehydration, with light components refluxing from the top of the tower and the bottom of the tower discharging according to the impurity content. Acetone-containing wastewater is collected separately from the general wastewater system to avoid impacting the wastewater treatment load.

Reduction takes precedence over treatment: For collection points with high water content in the incoming gas, precooling and dehumidification should be carried out first. This will reduce the amount of water vapor entering the condensation section, leading to a decrease in both the water content of the condensate and the dehydration load at the downstream end.

Controlling the moisture content at the source is equally effective: Moisture-related operations during the feeding process are arranged separately, ensuring that cleaning water and material moisture do not mix into the exhaust system; condensate from the collection pipeline is regularly drained to prevent water vapor from entering. By implementing these source-related measures, the downstream dehydration equipment can be downsized, leading to a simultaneous reduction in investment and operating costs. The type of dehydration equipment is determined by scale: small-scale operations use adsorption drying, while large-scale operations employ distillation cutting. When selecting the equipment type, it is important to understand the annual moisture fluctuation range of the condensate and verify it under the most unfavorable operating conditions.

How to implement operation management

  1. Record the intake concentration and condensation temperature level by batch, and establish a corresponding relationship table;
  2. The recovered liquid is tested for moisture and purity batch by batch, and is diverted for reuse according to the test results;
  3. Separately measure the acetone-containing wastewater and regularly test its chemical oxygen demand (COD) load;
  4. Incorporate the inspection of frost layer and defrosting cycle at low temperature stages, and increase the frequency during humid seasons;
  5. Regularly inspect the regeneration discharge port at the downstream of membrane separation or adsorption to verify the effectiveness of the control measures.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the appropriate water content requirement for the reuse of acetone recovery liquid in synthesis?

Based on the reaction system, most synthetic ingredients require moisture content below a few thousandths. The overhead from the distillation dehydration tower can achieve this level, and batches are tested and blended. Batches that do not meet the standard are returned to the tower for further processing.

Is it cost-effective to use pure condensation with low concentration and high air volume?

Is it cost-effective to calculate the temperature-dependent cost? When the temperature required to compress acetone to meet emission standards is too low, the cost of cold energy exceeds the recovery value. For routes combining condensation with membrane separation or adsorption in series, the total cost is lower under most operating conditions.

Can acetone tail gas be directly adsorbed by activated carbon?

It can serve as a gate-keeping stage, but the adsorption heat of acetone is relatively high, and directly introducing high-concentration gas into the carbon bed poses a risk of temperature rise. Before adsorption, condense the gas to reduce the concentration. The carbon bed only handles low-concentration exhaust gas, ensuring safe operation.
