The pharmaceutical industry consumes large quantities of solvents and uses a wide variety of them: methanol, ethanol, acetone, ethyl acetate, and dichloromethane are used in rotation in the same workshop. With each change in batch number and product, the composition of the exhaust gas also changes. Such operating conditions pose a challenge for recovery devices - handling single-component conditions is manageable, but switching between multiple varieties is where the real skill lies. The core idea of configuration is to make the device flexible enough to "follow the batch number".
Firstly, there are many varieties and short batches: a workshop may handle over a dozen solvents throughout the year, with each type having a usage cycle ranging from a few days to several weeks. Secondly, there are significant fluctuations in operating conditions: the gas volume and concentration vary significantly across processes such as reaction, distillation, drying, and cleaning, and also change within the same batch. Thirdly, there are strict traceability requirements: pharmaceutical companies have rigid requirements for solvent residue and cross-contamination, and the whereabouts of the recovered liquid must be traceable and verifiable. These characteristics necessitate grouping configurations, allowing for margins, and providing inspection ports.
For device selection under varying production conditions, it is better to base it on typical batches rather than extreme batches - using a powerful device for a small task can be inefficient under fluctuating conditions. After the device is put into operation, review the batch data quarterly, and the definition of typical conditions should be revised continuously based on actual production, so that the configured margin can always be utilized effectively.
The collection end is grouped by solvent type: water-soluble (alcohols, ketones) and esters, halogenated hydrocarbons each have separate pipelines to avoid component mixing and turning the condensate into a difficult-to-handle mixture; the branches of the shared main pipeline are equipped with valves and concentration detection points, and the branches are switched during production change and the pipeline is confirmed to be purged clean. The purging procedure for batch switching is written into the operating procedures: the purging duration, destination, and confirmation standards are implemented item by item, and the residue of the previous batch is not carried over to the condensate of the next batch - this is particularly important for the pharmaceutical quality system.
The condensation section is configured according to the temperature range requirements that cover all solvents, with the temperature range benchmarked on low-boiling-point halogenated hydrocarbons that are difficult to cover. The processing capacity is determined based on the peak value of typical batches, with short-term peaks being reduced using buffer volume. The condensate side is divided into tanks based on varieties: condensates from different solvents are stored in separate tanks, tested separately, and disposed of separately. The capacity of the tank area is calculated backward based on the usage of long batches. The destination of the recovered liquid is determined based on the variety: it is reused for the production of the same variety, downgraded for cleaning purposes, or outsourced for disposal. Samples are retained for each batch, with records corresponding to the batch number, meeting the traceability requirements.
| link | characteristic | Configuration arrangement |
|---|---|---|
| Collection pipeline | There are many varieties, which are easy to mix | Group by solvent category |
| Branch switching | Varies with batch number | Valve plus concentration detection point |
| Batch switching | The residue needs to be blown off | "Purge procedure is included in the regulations" |
| Condensation section | Temperature range covers multiple components | Take the low boiling point component as the benchmark |
| Condensate tank area | Store by variety | Separate tanks for separate inspection and disposal |
| Recycled liquid | Traceability of whereabouts | Correspondence of batch-by-batch sample retention ledgers |
Not recommended. The separation cost of mixed condensate is high, and the reuse value is significantly reduced. The initial investment for grouped collection is much less than that for post-separation. The more complex the components, the more evident this cost difference becomes. For low-concentration streams that cannot be grouped, they should be processed together.
The collection of branch switching and pipeline purging is usually completed within half a day, while the switching between the condensation section and the condensate tank area depends on the specific varieties. By establishing purging and switching as standard procedures and practicing them, the time can be controlled, preventing delays that cause the entire line to wait for materials.
If the purity, moisture, and impurities meet the standards, they can be reused. Pharmaceutical solvents have specific requirements for the impurity profile, and each batch should be tested against internal control standards: those that meet the standards can be reused, while those that are downgraded should be converted for cleaning purposes. A record of the disposal should be kept in a ledger, ensuring a closed traceability chain.
