Methanol is a bulk solvent widely used in the chemical, pharmaceutical, and fuel industries, with a boiling point of approximately 65℃, making it a low-boiling-point solvent among common solvents. These two properties, low boiling point and water solubility, determine the configuration approach for methanol recovery: the condensation temperature should be set at a lower level, and the condensate side should be separated from water. By properly configuring these two key points, the methanol recovery process becomes clear and stable.
The methanol tail gas in chemical production originates from emissions from the synthesis loop, non-condensable gas at the top of the distillation tower, and tank breathing. In the pharmaceutical and fine chemical industries, methanol is predominantly used as a reaction solvent and washing solvent, and is carried in reaction exhaust gas, vacuum pump outlet, and dry tail gas. Formaldehyde production and breathing emissions from fuel blending devices are also concentrated sources. The concentrations of these gases vary greatly: the concentration of non-condensable gas at the vacuum pump outlet and distillation is high, the dry tail gas has a large volume but low concentration, and tank breathing fluctuates with loading and unloading. During collection, these gases are grouped and collected according to high and low concentrations, ensuring a stable load on the treatment section.
Methanol vapor exhibits stronger swelling properties towards sealing materials compared to hydrocarbons. When selecting the type of sealing components for collection pipelines and covers, it is advisable to entrust the manufacturer with verifying the compatibility of the medium. The condition of the sealing components should be included in the regular inspection checklist. Most complaints regarding unusual odors initially arise from the sealing process.
The dew point of methanol varies significantly with its concentration. The condensation temperature level is calculated based on the actual concentration dew point of the inlet gas: for the high-concentration branch, two stages of water cooling plus one stage of low-temperature section can achieve significant recovery; for the low-concentration high-airflow branch, first reduce the volume for concentration, then enter the condensation section, directly deep-cooling the high-airflow low-concentration tail gas, which is not cost-effective in terms of energy consumption. Frost prevention in the low-temperature section should be considered in advance: after frost forms on the heat exchange surface, heat transfer deteriorates and pressure difference increases. The defrosting cycle should be scheduled based on the trend of pressure difference, and the arrangement of defrosting and liquid drainage should be written into the operating procedures.
Methanol and water are completely miscible, and the condensate does not stratify. The disposal route is different from that of ketones and aromatic hydrocarbons: the condensate is graded according to concentration. High-concentration condensate is metered and reused or sold externally, while dilute methanol water is either subjected to distillation for concentration or treated as sewage. Direct discharge is both wasteful and increases the burden on sewage treatment. The condensate is stored in sealed tanks. Methanol has strong moisture absorption, and open storage will continuously introduce moisture, which will degrade the quality of the reused methanol. Explosion protection is a hard constraint for methanol recovery: methanol has a low flash point and a low lower explosion limit. Static grounding, concentration monitoring, and flame arresting facilities for the collection and condensation system must be configured in accordance with specifications. Concentration monitoring in the low-concentration range should be kept online, and grounding and monitoring points should be included in routine inspections.
| project | characteristic | Configuration considerations |
|---|---|---|
| boiling point | About 65℃ | Combination of water cooling and low temperature section |
| water-soluble | Completely miscible with water | Non-layered and non-graded disposal of condensate |
| volatility | It volatilizes quickly at room temperature | "Collect and seal strictly" |
| flash point | Low flash point requires high explosion-proof standards | The grounding concentration is monitored in place |
| Low temperature section | The heat exchange surface is prone to frost formation | Defrosting pressure differential row cycle |
| Rare alcohol water | Low concentration, low value | Concentration or following the sewage path |
Both have similar boiling points and are miscible with water, leading to similar preparation approaches. Methanol has a lower flash point and stronger toxicity, necessitating stricter requirements for explosion prevention and sealing. Additionally, its condensate disposal is subject to stricter emission control. The differences between the two primarily lie in safety and environmental protection aspects.
When the concentration of dilute alcohol water reaches two or more specific points, it is economically feasible to proceed with distillation for concentration. If the concentration is too low, direct distillation is not cost-effective in terms of energy consumption, and it should be treated and metered as wastewater. The concentration threshold is calculated using the energy price of the plant, rather than using a general standard.
Methanol itself has a low freezing point, but the freezing point of condensate containing water will increase. It is a common problem for liquid accumulation at low points in pipelines to freeze and block during winter. Insulation and heat tracing, as well as shutdown and draining, should be implemented before winter. The drain port should be included in the winter inspection checklist.
